Ride Report - Askern
Only 4 of us made it out for the ride to the Lakeside Cafe in Askern, including our newest member Simon. The majority of club members were on their way back from the London Nightrider charity ride.
We're now up to 21 members. Thank you for your continued support. We seem to be building a solid friendly club, with excellent cycling etiquette.
There were a few lumps and bumps in this one but the middle of the ride was relatively flat. The roads as a whole were good, nice quiet lanes and a few main roads. We did make a diversion a couple of miles from the cafe due to a bit of unplanned off roading being flagged up, and to get us off the busy A19 and onto quieter lanes. When we do this route again potentially a different route will be plotted from the cafe stop for the first few miles, just so were not on the same roads we came in on proceeding it.
The sun did eventually come out for us just as we were arriving at the cafe. Again like so many of our rides but now with the added summer heat, the ride back to Whiston was in beautiful warm sunshine with not a cloud in the sky with a little breeze. Perfect cycling conditions.
The Lakeside Cafe wasn't bad at all and very inexpensive and quick service. There was all your usual grub from bacon butties, beans on toast etc, cakes, buns and flapjacks, to chocolate bars and crisps. And of course coffee. We seemed to get there just in time before a queue formed.
There was seating outside as well as in. We were not the only small group of cyclists sat outside by the lake. 3 members of Geared Up Cycling Club were on the opposite table.
With only 4 of us out, a small group we were, but nevertheless we had no problems riding together pretty much all in club colours. The only hiccup was a puncture near the end of the ride but all club members waited or helped. Well done!
Our next Sunday club ride is this weekend, 12th June. Its not for the faint hearted as were off KOM hunting or rather a very hilly ride out to Stocksbridge and Wortley taking in several categorised climbs. See you there for those who can make it!
